Pharmacy shut for selling medicines without prescription

The National Health Regulatory Authority (NHRA) yesterday terminated the licence of a pharmacy and suspended its manager for a year for selling medication without a prescription. NHRA found that the pharmacy was selling “Lyrica” medicine without a prescription and at a higher price.

Actions followed an investigation into the violations and referring the pharmacy and its manager to the disciplinary committee.  The panel found that they were guilty of the violations attributed to them, the NHRA said. Supreme Council for Health approved the decision.

The National Health Regulatory Authority is an independent regulatory body established in 2010 under Law 38/2009.  The authority is in charge of regulating the provision of healthcare in Bahrain and ensuring appropriateness, continuity, efficiency and safety in delivering health services, both in the public and private sector.

The NHRA is responsible for registration and pricing of medicine, licensing pharmaceutical factories, granting approvals concerning conducting clinical trials, investigating professional misconduct claims, and conducting disciplinary hearings for health professionals in the Kingdom.
