Sudan deal welcomed

Bahrain has welcomed the initial signing of the constitutional declaration between the Transitional Military Council and the Forces for the Declaration of Freedom and Change in the brotherly Republic of Sudan.  In a statement, the Foreign Ministry underlined the importance of the step in establishing further peace and stability in the Republic of Sudan and realising the aspirations  of the Sudanese people in achieving progress and prosperity.

“The Kingdom appreciate the keenness of all parties on protecting the greater interest and for the efforts exerted to reach this agreement. “The Foreign Ministry reiterates the Kingdom of Bahrain’s firm stance of solidarity with the brotherly Republic of Sudan, especially during this crucial stage in history and its support for all that enhances Sudan’s interests and benefits its people,” the statement also said.

The African Union envoy to Sudan said on Saturday that the pro-democracy movement and the ruling military council have finalised a power-sharing agreement. Mohammed el Hassan Lebatt told reporters that the two sides “fully agreed” on a constitutional declaration outlining the division of power for a three-year transition to elections.

He did not provide further details, but said both sides would meet later on Saturday to prepare for a signing ceremony. The pro-democracy coalition issued a statement saying they would sign the document Sunday. The military overthrew President Omar Al Bashir in April following months of mass protests against his three-decade-long authoritarian rule.

The protesters remained in the streets, demanding a rapid transition to a civilian government. They have been locked in tense negotiations with the military for weeks while holding mass protests.
