Hijri New Year Holiday on Saturday

All ministries, departments and official institutions in the Kingdom will remain closed on Saturday corresponding to Muharram 1. H i s Royal Highness Prince Khalifa bin Salman Al Khalifa the Prime Minister announced this in a circular announcing Hijri New Year holiday. The day will be compensated by Sunday, as the holiday day falls on a weekly off day.

The occasion marks the arrival of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and his followers from Makkah to Madinah more than 14 centuries ago. Known as the Hijrah, this led to the founding of the first Muslim community (umma).  Hijri derived from Arabic word Hijrah (migration) marks the beginning of the Islamic era, or 1AH, in 622AD.

The Islamic year consists of 12 lunar months and is 10 to 12 days shorter than the Gregorian year. Months on the Hijri calendar are Muharram, Safar, Rabi Al Awwal, Rabi Al Thani, Jumada Al Ula, Jumada Al Akhira, Rajab, Sha’aban, Ramadan, Shawwal, Dhu Al Qa’da and Dhu Al Hijja.
