Court adjourns hearing in ‘student attack’ case
The First High Criminal Court yesterday adjourned the trial of four high school students, who allegedly beat up a fellow student in school and caused him a permanent disability, to September 8, 2018. The details of the case showed that the victim was hit by the first defendant while inside Shaikh Isa Secondary Boys’ School in Isa Town last November.
According to the victim’s statement, three other students - the three other defendants in the case - joined the first defendant to attack him. The victim also told the Prosecutors that the same group, along with more students, attacked him inside the classroom on the next day, “using chairs and their fists”.
The victim was hit multiple times for nearly three minutes in the head, face and shoulders, before he managed to escape. The coroner’s report showed that the victim suffered several injuries that included partial retinal detachment in the retina of the right eye. One of the injuries, according to the coroner, is considered a permanent disability that is estimated to be 13 per cent and affecting his eyesight.
The victim’s father had earlier demanded a compensation of BD1,000 in the court. The court had earlier released the four defendants after ordering them to pay BD100 each in bail amount. The defendants, are facing the charges of attacking the victim and causing the injuries that were mentioned in the medical reports.
