Court rejects cop attacker’s appeal

The High Appeals Court has upheld the jail sentence issued against a businessman, who was tried for attacking a police officer. The latter was assaulted by the defendant after trying to arrest him to face civil cases. He was sentenced to three years in prison and he challenged the High Criminal Court’s verdict.

The defendant had an arrest warrant issued against him after being accused in several civil cases, according to prosecutors. “He was wanted in many cases and one of the complainants along with his colleague spotted the defendant on Exhibition Road inside his car. “The complainant alerted the police, which arrived on the scene.

Though the defendant attempted to flee, he got stuck in the traffic jam.” The police team urged the defendant to surrender. “As soon as he got out of the car, he punched me in the face and ran away. “He climbed up a fence and escaped. He also attacked another police officer while trying to flee,” the victim told Prosecutors.

Though the defendant was later arrested, he would escape after getting out on bail. The businessman was convicted in absentia. Later, he surrendered before the police and challenged the lower court’s verdict.
