Seven people died this year in such mishaps till August. Twenty four serious accidents and 28 minor accidents were reported during the period.
Last year, five persons died, while 39 got seriously injured in bicycle-related accidents. Another thirty six people survived with minor injuries.
Al Naumi said these kinds of accidents continue to occur despite holding awareness and legal campaigns by the department. Requiring bicyclists to follow traffic rules, Al Naumi said that bicycle is a means of transport for many, especially migrant workers, as it is affordable and doesn’t require a licence.
He called upon bicyclists to wear light colour clothing to be seen by other road users and use hand signs for communication on the roads.
He added they should use pedestrian crossing on highways and ensure that their bicycles are in good conditions.
