For a low-carbon economy

Bahrain’s transition to a low-carbon economy received a new push yesterday with the establishment of a new Sustainable Energy Authority (SEA). His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa issued Decree 87 / 2019 establishing the Authority tasked with raising energy efficiency and harnessing sustainable energy sources to generate electric power through private or joint ventures.

The authority, affiliated to the Cabinet, will encourage more investments in the sector and conduct a comprehensive assessment to raise efficiency and develop a general policy. SEA will make proposals to set national sustainable energy goals in association with governmental and non-governmental entities.

Besides, the authority will be responsible for developing awareness and educational programmes, training courses in cooperation with Bahrain Center for Strategic, International and Energy Studies, monitoring the performance of the sustainable energy sector and developing technical and economic indicators.

Dr Mirza named president

Separately, His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa announced appointing Dr Abdulhussain bin Ali Mirza as president of the Sustainable Energy Authority. The Prime Minister will implement the decree that comes into effect on the day of its issuance. The decree will be published in the Official Gazette.
