Thai couple get appeal rejected in drugs case

The First Supreme Criminal Court of Appeal on Monday upheld the five years imprisonment sentence issued against a Thai couple who were earlier convicted of selling narcotics. The court also upheld a oneyear imprisonment sentence issued against the first defendant, the woman, for profiting from prostitution, a fine of BD3,000 on each of them and deportation, in addition to upholding a ten days imprisonment sentence issued against the second defendant, the man, for illegal stay in the Kingdom.

As reported earlier, the couple were sentenced by the High Criminal Court in July this year. The woman is said to have been trafficking Methamphetamine, a drug locally known as “Shabu”, in Bahrain for BD200- BD500 through her boyfriend. The boyfriend was reportedly playing the role of the middleman between his girlfriend and the customers.

According to court files, the woman was very cautious to avoid being caught and she was resisting attempts to reveal her identity to customers. However, an undercover agent contacted her boyfriend and requested to buy BD440 worth of the substance. After meeting the boyfriend in Juffair area in the Capital Governorate, the undercover agent was taken to the couple’s apartment.

Once the deal was done and the agent received the drugs, he immediately instructed the anti-narcotics police to raid the apartment. Women Police searched the woman’s belongings, and the amount the agent paid to purchase the drugs was found in her purse, in addition to tools used in drugs abuse, including a scale and a bag of Shabu.

The woman initially claimed that she wasn’t involved in drugs trafficking, confessing that she is only working in prostitution, having sexual intercourse with men for BD30-BD40 an hour. However, the boyfriend told prosecutors that she was the one who was giving him the drugs to distribute them, revealing that he was also engaged in prostitution.
