Bomber loses appeal; life sentence upheld

The High Appeals Court has upheld the sentence issued against a defendant accused of detonating a bomb. The defendant was among three men tried in the case and were handed down life sentences for setting off an explosive device.

The blast which was caused by the device led to the death of a fourth man who was with them at the time of their attempt to trigger the bomb. According to court files, the bomb exploded, killing the fourth man while they were planning to target police officers in Eker village.

The incident took place in the same village at a warehouse of a company, where the device was stored.  The owner of the company was among those who reviewed the scene after the explosion and described the incident as horrific. “We heard a strong noise coming out of the warehouse. We rushed to the scene and we saw 10 to 15 men there,” he told Prosecutors.

The incident caused damages to the warehouse, as a result of which the trio were fined BD220.  Investigations revealed that the killed man finished his secondary school and headed to Iran and stayed there for two weeks. The first defendant, meanwhile, told Prosecutors that they plotted to plant the bomb beside the place where police officers are stationed in the village.
