Defendant to undergo mental health test in cop attack case

The First High Criminal Court has ordered a detainee accused of assaulting a policeman to undergo screening to determine if he’s mentally fit. The court has adjourned the case to December 10, 2019, to review the psychiatrist’s report. The Public Prosecution accused the man on March 26 this year of assaulting a public servant, the policeman, and causing the injuries mentioned in the medical report.

The defendant had apparently hit the policeman on his head using rocks and bit his hand. Additionally, the defendant is accused of verbally assaulting the victim in public.

The details of the case, which occurred at Salmaniya Medical Complex, showed that it was reported to Hoora Police Station by the victim’s colleague, who informed that the victim was attacked by the detainee at the hospital. Court files showed that the incident took place when the defendant attempted to escape from the policeman, and when the latter attempted to stop him, the defendant attacked him on the face, nose and chest.

The policeman was able to control the defendant with the help of other policemen and handed him over to a police force that arrived at the hospital from Hoora Police Station. The defendant was then referred to the Public Prosecution.
