Warning against plastic surgeries performed by unlicensed doctors

Prominent dermatologists in the Kingdom have issued a warning against plastic surgeries being performed by unlicensed doctors. This came as they attended Bahrain Second Conference of Dermatology, Laser and Aesthetics (BDLA), organised by BDA Medical Training and Events Centre, yesterday.

The conference showcased three-days of high-quality scientific sessions and in-depth discussions on a number of issues and topics faced by skin care professionals and industry experts. The event brought together more than 700 leading skincare specialists, top plastic surgeons and physicians from across various countries under one roof to explore the latest technology advancements and medical treatments for different types of skin diseases. Skincare specialists attending the event highlighted that women make up 80 per cent of patients, who underwent cosmetic procedures including facial Botox and fillers and laser treatments.

Meanwhile, experts stressed the importance of selecting experienced doctors and national or international accredited medical centres in conducting plastic surgeries, specially postpartum or after weight loss, and sleeve gastrostomy. Moreover, dermatologists confirmed physical exams, tests, and family history are crucial before making a diagnosis for hair treatments and hair transplant surgery for both men and women. Dermatologists recommended using sunscreen, which blocks sun’s UVB rays to decrease risks of skin cancers and prevent premature skin ageing caused by the sun.

Head of conference scientific committee Dr Hussain Jumaa confirmed that skincare specialists and experts discussed a number of topics related to skin health under various sessions such as ‘laser, fractional laser, Botox, skin ageing, hair disorders, Psoriasis, lupus erythematous, and Vitiligo as well as non-surgery  treatments. In this regard, Dr Jumaa also highlighted that conference discussed the importance of using modern treatment for skin diseases, in addition to the uses of biological treatment in severe cases of psoriasis associated with arthritis.

Dr Jumaa also emphasised the need to provide psychological and family support to Vitiligo patients and raise awareness of this disease. Head of Organising Committee, Dr Ahmed Shahda stressed that in order to stay relevant, skin specialists and practitioners should Integrate and cooperate locally and regionally with the GCC and Arab countries to achieve the best results and in complete safety. He also highlighted that holding specialised educational workshops is crucial for developing plastic medicine and surgery in the region. Dr Shahda further stressed the importance of conference recommendations, noting that conference organisers will co-operate with all partners and stakeholders to put those recommendations into practice.
