Father fined for smashing daughter’s new smartphone

A Bahraini man, who destroyed his daughter brand new phone, in a fit of rage, was fined by the court after his wife filed a complaint against him seeking compensation. The phone was gifted by the man’s wife to their daughter on her birthday.

However, on that day, following an altercation with their daughter, the man smashed the phone, making it completely unusable in the process, the wife told the police. Police registered a case against him based on the report filed by his wife.

The wife presented to the court a receipt confirming the purchase and an expert note saying that the device is completely unusable and beyond repair. Prosecutors following investigation pressed charges against the man.

The Lower Criminal Court found the man guilty of the charges and ordered him to pay a fine of BD100 and another BD200 to cover the cost of the phone. Although the current penal law allows the court to grant jail terms for such offences, the judges decided to settle the case with a fine.
