Muharraq may get first farmers market

The Works Ministry is planning to set up a farmers market in Muharraq following a huge demand from the part of people in the governorate.

This comes after the success of farmers’ markets in Budaiya and Salmabad. As of now, the Ministry of Works, Municipality Affairs and Urban Planning is conducting a study on how to establish a farmers market in Muharraq governorate. Thousands of people visited farmers market in Budaiya every week.

Meanwhile, Undersecretary at the Ministry of Works, Municipalities Affairs and Urban Planning Dr Nabil Abu Al Fath said that the organising committee would ensure that the vegetables and fruits sold at the market will be domestic produce only. He said that a diverse range of activities will be part of the market with many events planned.

The five months long market provides a platform for local farmers to sell their fresh produce to the public. The market is set up at the Agriculture Centre in Budaiya Botanical Garden. The market was established to promote Bahrain’s homegrown agricultural produce and to support local farmers.

Over the years, it has become extremely popular with thousands visiting to purchase at the market every week from December to April every year.  Apart from the agricultural produce, it also features a section for traditional crafts, restaurants, and an entertainment activities for children.

The market is being held every Saturday from 8:00 am to 2:00 pm and will end on April 27. Another farmers market is being organised at Hoorat A’ali.

The Hoorat A’ali market is organised by the the National Initiative for Agricultural Development with the co-operation of Bahrain Development Bank (BDB) and the Ministry of Municipalities Affairs and Agriculture and Urban Planning and has also been a huge success.
