Manama Souq revamp work to be completed by mid-2020

The revamp of Manama Souq will be completed by mid-2020, it emerged. The revamp work is edging to a close as officials confirmed that the market would be completed in another seven months. According to concerned officials, 300 stores at the souq will be revamped. Officials said that the project has been divided into five stages.

“So far, Phase One has been completed and four stages remain to be completed.” Meanwhile, the seventh meeting of the Manama Souq Development Committee, chaired by the Chief Executive Officer of the Bahrain Tourism and Exhibitions Authority (BTEA), Nader Al Moayyed, was held at Bab Al Bahrain Mall. During the meeting, members of the committee discussed the latest developments of the Manama Souq project.

They also visited the souq to inspect and view the progress of the project including the improved storefronts and signage as well as the renovation of the old buildings facade. “We strive to work closely with all parties involved in the Manama Souq development project to ensure its timely completion.

“Manama Souq is a wellknown touristic site and an attractive destination for many shoppers therefore it is essential to develop its infrastructure with an aim to attract Bahraini visitors and tourists from the GCC countries and beyond,” said Mr Al Moayyed. “The revitalisation of the Manama Souq, and the quest to develop and preserve it aims to re-energise the tourism sector and shift it to be one of the main contributors to the national economy,” he added. 

The Manama Souq Development Committee meetings are held regularly among all concerned parties to discuss the latest developments of this vital project, which aims to further develop the tourism sector in the Kingdom and increase its contribution to the national economy. 

The committee comprises representatives from the Ministry of Works, Municipalities Affairs and Urban Planning, Bahrain Authority for Culture and Antiquities, Urban Planning and Development Authority, Economic Development Board, Capital Municipality, Capital Secretariat Council as well as a number of Manama Souq traders.
