Medical team at SMC successfully performs ‘complex kidney surgery’

Marking a medical milestone in the Kingdom, an elderly patient underwent a successful operation at the Salmaniya Medical Complex (SMC).

The medical team from the SMC Renal Ward performed the endoscopy and removed a kidney which had a malign tumour. 

“The woman who is in her sixties was discharged in good health after recovering from the operation,” said Urologist and Kidney Transplant Consultant Dr Abdulsalam Ahmadi who led the medical team that performed the endoscopy. 

He said that the patient was diagnosed with a malign tumour in one of her kidneys which caused her a vein thrombosis that required an urgent medical intervention. 

Dr Abdulsalam Ahmadi said that an endoscopic procedure was performed successful on the patient without the need for customary surgical intervention.

Dr Ahmadi, who headed the surgical team that performed the delicate operation, said that the patient was admitted to the hospital with acute abdominal pain.

“The patient had a tumour which was caused by a thrombosis in the renal vein.

The case required a rapid intervention to fully perform the endoscopic procedure without the need for customary surgical intervention.

” Dr Ahmadi emphasised that the patient has fully recovered and left the hospital three days after the operation, in good health. He emphasised the role of modern technologies to conduct such delicate and complex operations.

Dr Rani Al Agha said the surgery department at SMC keeps pace with global developments in endoscopic surgeries that are not only limited to the urinary tract, but also encompasses intestine, colon, chest and obesity procedures.

Recently, three patients underwent successful Mitral valve repair (MVr) surgeries at the Mohammed Bin Khalifa Bin Salman Al Khalifa Cardiac Centre.

A Bahraini medical team performed successfully MVr operations within two days, using the new MitraClip catheter technique for the first time in the Kingdom. The medical team, which performed the MVr included Dr Shirin Mubarak Al Shaikh, Dr Mohammed Amine and Dr Siham Ali.

The patient thanked the surgical team that performed the surgery under the supervision of Dr. Abdel Salam Ahmadi and his assistants, commending the  Ministry of Health for providing the best medical services to the citizens.
