Bahrain welcomes Arab Coalition’s ceasefire in Yemen

TDT | Manama

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has welcomed the announcement of a unilateral comprehensive ceasefire by the Joint Forces Command of the Coalition to Restore Legitimacy in the Republic of Yemen for a period of two weeks, starting yesterday, subject to an extension, in response to a UN invitation. In a statement, the Foreign Affairs Ministry commended that the decision expresses “a noble humanitarian stance that considers the urgent international circumstances imposed by the spread of the coronavirus in the countries of the region and the world at large”. “It also hails it as reflective of the concern for the life and safety of Yemeni people and their highest interests, and indicative of a sincere desire to spare the brotherly Yemeni people the consequences of this international pandemic,” the statement added.

“The Ministry expresses hope that the Houthi group will respond to this wise humanitarian initiative that would open the way to a comprehensive and sustainable ceasefire in all Yemeni territories, and thus sparing the blood of Yemeni people and paving the way for the resumption of the political negotiations.” Meanwhile, Minister of Foreign Affairs Dr. Abdullatif bin Rashid Al Zayani has signed the decision to establish the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Council. This body will monitor the progress of work and performance, and develop general policies and executive plans. The Council will also contribute to decision-making and dealing with issues and developments, as well as follow up on the evaluation of political and security developments as well as regional and international diplomacy. This came during a virtual meeting with a number of Ambassadors of the Kingdom of Bahrain to Arab and foreign countries.
