University student gets 10 years for selling drugs on social media

TDT | Manama

A university student who used social media networks to sell drugs has been jailed for 10 years by the High Criminal Court. The court also fined the man BD5,000 and confiscated the drugs caught in his possession.

The man was discovered offering drugs on social media platforms by the Anti-Narcotics Department in the Interior Ministry. An undercover police officer contacted the defendant and requested to buy drugs from him. The defendant responded and both parties agreed to meet in A’ali in the Northern Governorate. Upon his arrival to the agreed spot, the defendant noticed a suspicious presence of police and attempted to flee the scene, but he was eventually arrested.

The man denied the accusation of selling drugs, claiming that he was bluffing so he could steal the money from addicts. Additionally, he alleged that he had only been doing this for one week. A piece of hashish was found in his possession, but the defendant told interrogators that it was for his personal consumption and claimed that he wasn’t intending to sell it. The man was referred to the Public Prosecution, which charged him with drug peddling and consumption. He was later referred to court for trial, where he was sentenced to 10 years of imprisonment and fined BD5,000 for abusing and selling hashish and methamphetamine.
