Drunk driver gets three years’ jail

TDT | Manama

A drunk pick-up truck driver, who assaulted police while resisting arrest in A’ali last December, was sentenced by the First Criminal Court to three years behind bars. According to the details of the case, the defendant was spotted by a civilian police patrol while driving recklessly near A’ali, swerving between vehicles in a manner that posed danger to commuters. The cops followed the defendant inside A’ali where they stopped him and noticed that he was in an abnormal condition.

The police mentioned in their statements that the booze-smelling man drove off in an attempt to escape from them. A back-up police patrol soon arrived from West Riffa Station to assist in the arrest of the man.

During his apprehension, the man physically and verbally assaulted the policemen, biting the hand of one of them, yelling at them and flicking a lit cigarette at them. However, the man was eventually detained and referred to the Public Prosecution, which later referred him to the court. On December 4 last year, the Public Prosecution completed its interrogations and charged the man of assaulting a public servant, during and due to performing his job, by pushing and biting him in the hand, causing the injuries described in the medical report. He was also charged the same day with driving under the influence of alcohol and verbally assaulting the on-duty policemen while and because of performing their work.
