Shura Council approves draft law on volunteering to support public security work

TDT | Manama

The Shura Council approved yesterday a draft law on volunteering to serve public security. This came during its 27th session, which was held remotely and was chaired by Council President Ali bin Saleh Al Saleh. The draft law aims to provide opportunities for those interested, both Bahrainis and expatriates, to share in civil efforts in the service of the public.

It was recommended for approval in principle by the Council’s Foreign Affairs, Defence and National Security Committee. The committee clarified that the draft law aims to regulate the provisions of volunteering for public service, stressing on its importance in providing support for public security forces in performing their duties and responsibilities. The committee noted that volunteering comes out of loyalty and a sense of belonging to the homeland; adding that it stems from the belief in community partnership and in the collective responsibility to safety and security that is shared amongst the people of the country.

After the Council members completed their inquiries addressed to representatives of the Ministry of Interior during the session, the Council decided to approve the draft law in accordance with the recommendations of the Committee. It now must be approved by the Cabinet and ratified by His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa.

The Shura Council’s meeting yesterday marked only the second remote session in its history. The transition was made in line with precautionary measures to help curb the spread of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. A few individuals were physically present at the meeting, headed by Al Saleh. The other Shura Council members and government representatives attended the session remotely from their offices or homes.
