Strengthening COVID-19 emergency measures discussed

TDT | Manama

Bahrain Association of Emergency Medicine (BAEM) at Bahrain Medical Society (BMS) organised a remote seminar during which they discussed ways to strengthen the new treatment steps that can be provided to people infected with the coronavirus (COVID-19).

These include steps when patients arrive at a hospital’s emergency and how critical cases are dealt with when they experience trouble breathing.

During the seminar, which lasted for about two hours with the presence of nearly 50 doctors and interested persons from Bahrain and across the region, the latest medical developments in tackling COVID-19 were reviewed, in terms of emergency medicine, family medicine and general medicine.

The discussion also covered the steps that hospitals must take to strengthen preparedness for the pandemic or any pandemic in general within the framework of “Disaster Medicine”, and the treatment protocol issued by the National Taskforce for Combatting COVID-19 in Bahrain.

Measures that were taken by China and the World Health Organisation were also discussed in the seminar, especially those when the virus was first discovered along with the latest information related to vaccines and methods of examination and analysis.

The seminar also examined the consequences of the pandemic on individuals from a psychological and social point of view. The seminar was attended by the BMS chairman and Emergency Medicine Consultant Dr Ghada Al Qassim, and BAEM president and Emergency Medicine Consultant Dr Salah Al Ghanem.

Others on hand were BAEM vice-president and Emergency Medicine Consultant Dr Amjad Obaid, Infectious Disease Consultant Dr Tariq Al Musawi, who is also specialised in the field of Intensive Care Medicine, and emergency doctor from Saudi Arabia Dr Khaled Al Salem.

Dr Al Ghanem said that this seminar comes within the framework of the society’s keenness to follow up on the latest developments in the field of tackling the coronavirus and to use the expertise of doctors from different specialities to create an understanding of the best ways to provide health and medical care for infected people.

“COVID-19 is a new virus and this is the challenge that faces everyone, and there are no fixed scientific methods and theories in fighting it, so we tried to combine infectious diseases, intensive care medicine, and emergency medicine in this seminar, with the aim of exchanging views and experiences, and developing our knowledge and understanding of it,” said Dr Al Ghanem.

“This contributes to strengthening the treatment services for patients, and contribute to the success of the prominent experience of the Kingdom in tackling the pandemic.”
