MP calls for tightening grip on illegal car stunts
TDT | Manama
A lawmaker called for imposing stricter punishments on individuals performing illegal and dangerous stunts with their cars and motorcycles on Bahrain’s roads, TDT has learnt. MP Ali Zayed’s call came at a time when such incidents are increasingly reported in different areas of the Kingdom, especially in residential areas, posing great danger to people’s lives and property.
The MP, who is also the Council of Representatives’ Second Deputy Speaker, demanded the authorities tighten their grip on such practices, claiming that these violators are reportedly performing stunts and burnouts in residential areas and in late hours, without regard to residents, including the elderly and children.
“The General Directorate of Traffic has intensified its awareness campaigns recently to curb such practices, and we support this approach,” said MP Zayed. “Parents should also assume their responsibilities and monitor the behaviour of their children to protect their lives from the dangers of traffic accidents that may occur while performing such dangerous moves.”
He pointed out in a statement that the violators or innocent lives are usually the victims of such “irresponsible acts”, adding that “lessons should be learnt from the deadly accidents that previously occurred due to such illegal practices”.
The MP further stated: “The traffic law grants the General Directorate of Traffic wide jurisdictions and it must deal more strictly with the matter, especially because the violators consider it a hobby to release their energy and are calling for special circuits to perform such stunts.
“But, in the absence of such facilities, they don’t have the right to risk their lives and others. The increase in the number of fatalities caused by traffic accidents is alarming and such practices should be stopped immediately by implementing strict measures. The society should also play a role in monitoring this matter.”
