In stroke care, every minute counts: Dr Fatima Abdulla

Every minute counts, when it comes to stroke treatment, a top health official has said. Because for every minute a patient is having a stroke, almost 1.9 million neurons are lost, or 32,000 neurons per second. The sooner a medical team can intervene, better is the prospects of reducing disability and ensuring a better outcome.
This will be a focus of the upcoming 11th Arab Gulf Conference on Neurology, to be held in Bahrain in August this year and for the first time virtually. Dr Fatima Abdulla, President of the Neuroscience Association and the Organising Committee, announced. “We decided to hold this conference virtually, considering the coronavirus situation,” said Dr Abdulla adding, this also has another advantage.
The move saves doctors from the hassles of travelling long distance, which was proved a success in the recent European Neurology Conference held in the presence of 42,502 participants. The conference, in Bahrain, expecting the participation of more than 35 speakers from Bahrain, the Arab Gulf states, Europe and Canada.
Doctors will share the latest therapeutic developments in strokes, bleeding, migraines, multiple sclerosis, Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, involuntary nerve movements, muscular debility and peripheral nerves. Discussions will also focus on the latest developments in medicines for epilepsy worldwide and common challenges facing epilepsy treatment in the Gulf states.
