Man appeals five year sentence for attacking police officers

TDT Manama

The High Criminal Appeals Court announced it will issue its verdict in two weeks in the case of a man convicted of attacking two policemen. The defendant is said to have assaulted the two officers after they tried to prevent him from attacking a woman in Muharraq.

He was reportedly quarrelling with the woman in a public place in Muharraq and the two police officers attempted to intervene to resolve it, requesting him to accompany them to a nearby police station to understand the reasons behind the fight. However, he swore at them before physically attacking them. He later ran away and hid inside a property.

A police patrol arrived and surrounded the place, after which they broke into the property and apprehended him. According to court files, the defendant’s assault left a police officer with a broken nose, while the other was also injured. The defendant tried to escape trial by suggesting that he was drunk at the time of the assault.

But the High Criminal Court, the first court which heard his case, refuted his claims and slapped him with a five-year prison sentence. He has been found guilty of attacking on-duty police officers to prevent them from doing their job. The High Criminal Appeals Court will issue its verdict on June 28.
