New initiative launched on World Sickle cell Awareness Day

TDT | Manama

Minister of Labor and Social Development, Jameel Humaidan, yesterday announced the launch of a “BE” initiative on the occasion of World Sickle Cell Awareness Day.  The event held virtually organised by the Bahrain Sickle Cell Society was held in the presence of Minister of Health, Faika Bint Saeed Al-Saleh.

Labour Minister thanked Bahrain Sickle Cell Society Chairman Zakariya Ibrahim Al-Kadhem and other board members for the Be-This-Year initiative.  Sickle cell disease (SCD), which is a group of blood disorders that affect a person’s red blood cells, is a genetic condition that is passed on from parents.

The disorder causes normal round and flexible blood cells to become stiff and sickle-shaped, which in turn stops the blood cells and the oxygen they carry from moving freely around the body
