Man remanded for posting ‘sectarian’ tweets

TDT | Manama

A man in his 30s has been remanded pending trial for posting “sectarian” tweets, the Public Prosecution confirmed yesterday. This came in a press statement, in which deputy attorney general Ali Al Jassim was quoted as saying that the Public Prosecution had received a report from the General Directorate of Anti-Corruption and Economic and Electronic Security, informing them of a post on social media network Twitter inciting sedition and hate against a group of people in a way that would harm public peace.

The prosecution’s statement came less than 24 hours after the Interior Ministry announced the arrest of a man, tweeting: “Anti-Cyber Crime: Man, 35, arrested for misusing social media. He posted a tweet that abused and incited against a religious sect.

Relevant procedures are being taken to refer him to the Public Prosecution.” Al Jassim clarified in the statement saying: “Once notified, the Public Prosecution initiated its investigations and interrogated the suspect, who confessed to posting the tweet.” The deputy attorney general added that the prosecution ordered to remand the man until the date of his hearing before the concerned court. No further information was available on the man’s identity.
