Southern municipality collects 60 truckloads of used furniture

TDT | Manama

A total of 60 truckloads of used furniture were removed by Southern Municipality officials as part of a cleaning drive. The furniture, officials said, collected from over 40 homes from June 22 until August. The project was held in cooperation with Municipal council and sanitation firm Urbaser, which has cleaning contract with the Northern and Southern Governorates.

The collected furniture was dismantled and transported via trucks after ensuring necessary COVID-19 precautionary measures. The southern municipality launched the “call for your furniture” project to reduce throwing of used furniture in open spaces, street and near garbage containers also making it impossible for cleaning companies to transport it with compressors designed for garbage and food wastes.

Usable items from the collected furniture, Authorities said, will be donated to charities, and will recycle non-usable ones. The municipality has a hotline for citizens to request the service seven days a week on phone number: (80070000). The service, currently reserved for the elderly, and people of determination, among others, is available two days a week on Sunday and Thursday.

The next phase calls for including all of the citizens in the southern region, increase the frequency of dismantling and moving furniture from two to five days a week with two pickups per day. This initiative, officials said, contributed in reducing the behaviours of disposing of old furniture in locations other than those designated for that.
