Be in fine fettle, Diet Idol launched

The first healthy cooking competition in the country kicked-off yesterday with the participation of 12 local cooks.

The three-day activity was themed “Diet Idol”. It was launched in a bid to combat obesity, obesity-related diseases and to promote healthy lifestyle.

It was held at Seef Mall under the patronage of Health Ministry Undersecretary Dr. Aysha Buanq, who was deputised by Health Promotion Director Dr. Amal al Jowder.

The competing chefs are tasked to cook healthy dishes within 30-45 minutes, including appetisers, main courses and desserts, while a selected jury will decide the winner of each day.

In charge of the competition was Family Medicine Specialist at Budaiya Health Centre Dr. Amina Taher, who expressed that “the competition aims to refute the notion that healthy meals can’t be rich and delicious in taste.”

She said that today would be the last day of the contest, which will be held from 7pm – 9pm and would be followed by an honouring ceremony of the winners and sponsors.

Reportedly, the Kingdom of Bahrain suffers from a significant rise in the number of people living with diseases like obesity, diabetes, heart disease and hypertension.

Additionally, Bahrain is classified as one of the top countries in terms of cases of obesity and diabetes.

Dr. Taher added, “Diet Idol reflects Health Ministry’s constant efforts to combat such diseases by following innovative methods.”
