Cop attacker jailed for a year

A 27-year-old Bahraini man accused of attacking a cop with an iron rod has been jailed for one year.

The defendant was said to have been among the 15 rioters who caused mayhem in the village of Tubli, paralysing a public road with blockades, including stones, planks and iron rods. The defendant was also charged with taking part in an illegal gathering.

The victim said that he saw the rioters when he was in a police car patrolling the area. "I left the car and I raced towards them in an effort to capture them. They ran away, but I managed to bust him (the defendant)," the officer told prosecutors. "He tried to flee by kicking my tummy and beating me with an iron rod. But he failed," he explained. The victim suffered mild injuries, and according to court files, he was out of duty for not more than 20 days.
