TDT | Manama

Hottest September in 118 years.

Not just for Bahrain, but for nations all over the world, this September was ‘exceptionally’ hot. In Bahrain, according to the Meteorological Directorate at the Ministry of Transportation and Telecommunications, September here was never hotter than this since 1902. Scientists all over the world say this is a clear indication of increasing emissions from human society.

A CNN reporting quoting scientists at Copernicus estimated last month that CO2 emissions from fires in the Arctic Circle have increased by more than a third compared with 2019, with 244 megatonnes of carbon pro- duced from January 1 to August 31, 2020. By comparison, the whole of 2019 saw only 181 megatonnes of carbon, the report added.

Met directorate said the Sep tember here was ‘hot and humid’ mainly due to moist easterly to Southeasterly winds.

40°C on ten days

During the month, Bahrain had ten days, where the maximum temperature exceeded 40°C. The 43.7°C recorded at Bahrain International Airport on September 9 goes on record as the fifth-highest maximum for September since 1946 at BIA.

The mean temperature of the month was 34.8°C, which is 2.4°C above the long-term normal, and this goes on record as the highest mean temperatures for September since 1902. The old record was 34.6°C recorded in September 2017, met data said.

“The mean maximum temper- ature of the month was 39.8°C which is 3.3°C above the long-term normal, and this goes on record as the highest mean maximum temperatures for September since 1946. The old record was 39.1°C recorded in September 2017.”
