Bahrain is among the list of countries on which the US is imposing new tariffs on aluminium sheet products. The tariffs, US Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross in a statement said, is based on an assessment that goods are being dumped into the US market. The tariffs will affect $1.96 billion worth of aluminium sheet products from 18 countries.
Ross said the tariff rate would be largest against Germany with 52 per cent to 132pc followed by Bahrain with rates in single digits.
Other than Bahrain, the list also includes Germany, Brazil, Croatia, Egypt, Greece, India, Indonesia, Italy, Oman, Romania, Serbia, Slovenia, South Africa, South Korea, Spain, Taiwan and Turkey.
Ross told Fox Business Network that the tariffs are imposed immediately, despite the department’s determination that there was dumping was preliminary.
He said a rise in US consumption of certain products amid the pandemic, such as recreational vehicles and boats, increased the importance of aluminium sheet pricing.
China is not on the list, but Ross said US tariffs are already in place on Beijing’s aluminium products, which led to Chinese excess capacity that displaced production in other countries and resulted in dumping in the United States.
Ross said the US International Trade Commission would make the final determination in February 2021.
