The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation is promoting the 12th edition of the UNESCO King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa Prize for the use of ICT in education, focusing on the theme: “Use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) to enhance the continuity and quality of learning”.

In this context, UNESCO recently issued a booklet on the 2020 edition, featuring an introduction to the award, eligibility criteria, selection criteria and ways to submit nominations, marking the opening of the nomination process. The 2020 edition will recognise scalable AI-powered solutions or technology innovations that have proven effective in improving learning outcomes of marginalised groups while ensuring ethical and equitable use of these technologies in education.

Special attention will be given to projects that provide access to education in remote areas or aim to improve the availability and affordability of connectivity for education and learning. It will honour Al-powered initiatives that provide relevant learning programmes for learners who are in crises, accurately analyse difficulties faced by students studying in a language other than their mother tongue and facilitate the learning of foreign languages, and facilitate cost-efficient access to quality learning opportunities for large numbers of learners with physical and cognitive disabilities.

Moreover, they can support teachers with a better diagnosis of learning problems and personally adaptive feedback to improve pedagogical responses. Established in 2005 and supported by the Kingdom of Bahrain, the Prize annually rewards individuals and organisations that use digital technologies to enhance teaching, learning and overall education performance. The two winners receive an award of $25,000 and international recognition for their innovative use of digital technologies in education.
