The second edition of annual “Inspired by a Book” exhibition will this year be part of Bahrain’s Authority for Culture and Antiquities National Day celebrations “Manama Doesn’t Sleep”. The event opens doors on Tuesday at Bahrain National Museum
Organised by @weallread society, this year’s art exhibition, the society said, goes local but with an international twist. The exhibition has its focus on a native short story by the famous Bahraini novelist Mohamed Abdulmalik “The Death of the Cart Owner”.
“The Death of the Cart Owner” was first published in 1972 as part of a short story collection. It was a recollection of Abdulmalik’s childhood, where he and his peers use to play with the cart of their neighbour, who worked in Manama old Souq as a porter.”
“Furthermore, we wanted to give our exhibition a unified theme by asking our artists to paint their understanding of the story by emulating the painting technique of the famous Dutch artist Vincent Van Gogh,” said the organisers.
“We chose Van Gogh, as he, much like the cart owner suffered in his life, yet, they both defied their misery by adding value to their societies.” “@weallread’s art exhibition is a way for us to thank Abdulmalik for uplifting the Bahraini literary horizon”
“Our exhibition is a way to remind us all of a poor cart owner, to remind us of a Bahraini past that we have outgrown but never forgotten.”
