MPs have condemned Qatar’s “systematic violations of the rights of Bahraini fishermen and seafarers within the Kingdom of Bahrain’s territorial waters” and advised against reconciliation until the issues are fully addressed through negotiation.
“The Council of Representatives has followed with great concern the Qatari state’s systematic violations of the rights of Bahraini fishermen and seafarers within the Kingdom of Bahrain’s territorial waters,” the Council said in a statement.
“The violations by the Qatari Coast Guard include harassing Bahraini fishermen and sailors by speed tagging boats and confiscating their boats and equipment, ultimately affecting their livelihoods. “The Council strongly condemns the arbitrary behaviour by the Qatari Coast Guard, which is contrary to customs, traditions, and respect among the citizens of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC).“
The Council stresses that reckless behaviour is a clear violation of the GCC statutes. “The Council expresses its deep disappointment and concern with the continued harmful behaviour, in violation of international conventions and fundamental freedoms, the right to personal security, to work, and to freedom of movement within the territorial borders of the Kingdom of Bahrain that are guaranteed by international agreements.”
“The Council affirms its support to the security action and legal measures taken by the Kingdom of Bahrain’s Ministry of Interior, in light of the unacceptable and dangerous Qatari actions that threaten the security and safety of Bahraini fishermen. The Council stresses the importance of taking all necessary measures to protect the rights of Bahrain’s fishermen and seafarers and to provide them with a safe environment for their legitimate right to practice their professions within the Kingdom’s territorial waters. The violations that have taken place in recent years have given the Council of Representatives no choice but to advise against reconciliation with the State of Qatar until resolving these issues through negotiation in a manner that addresses them fully in order to preserve the rights of Bahraini fisherman. The Council demands that all parties adhere to the Riyadh Agreement, signed by the countries, including Qatar, in order to preserve the safety and unity of the Gulf Cooperation Council.”
