About 52 truckloads of solid wastes were removed from Wadi Al-Buhair during a cleaning campaign organised by Southern District Municipality.
Undersecretary for Municipal Affairs at the Ministry of Works, Municipalities Affairs and Urban Planning, Sheikh Muhammad bin Ahmed Al Khalifa, Director-General of the Municipality, Asim Abdullatif Abdullah, MP Ahmed Al-Ansari, Municipal Member Abdullah Abdullatif, Clean Up Bahrain Association and Urbaser Bahrain joined hands for the campaign.
Eleven large-trucks and a crane were used to clean the area that had tons of building debris, broken furniture, wood, papers, glass, metal cans, cartons and other wastes.
The campaign forms part of an effort to maintain the place clean - a natural destination for migratory birds. Wadi Al Buhair is one of the rare natural habitats in the Kingdom known to support a high number of invertebrates and bird species, with denseto-open vegetations
Reports say the condition of reed swamps like Wadi in Bahrain have been majorly affected by groundwater exploitation, urbanisation and pollution.
Degrading water-quality is one of the issues faced in the geography. “We will continue this effort periodically to keep Wadi Al-Buhair clean and attractive,” said Asim Abdullatif Abdullah. Abdullah added that the collected wastes were immediately removed to far away locations.
