A rare yet successful operation was performed by a medical team from King Hamad University Hospital on a 15-year-old girl experiencing early menopause.
The medical team consisted of Professor Martin Corbally, a consultant paediatric surgeon, Professor Hosni Malas, consultant obstetrician, IVF and laparoscopic surgeon, head of the Obstetrics and Gynaecology Department, and their assistants.
The patient underwent medical and x-ray examinations on her genital area and the result confirmed the presence of a congenital anomaly that is characterised by the absence of the lower part of the vagina leading to blood retention in the reproductive system, causing early menopause.
Accordingly, the medical team performed a rare operation of its kind, by extracting the blood that was trapped in the reproductive system, and also constructing the lower part of the vagina.
The patient recovered a few days after the successful two-hour operation. However, she will have to undergo regular check-ups in the obstetrics and gynaecology department of the hospital.
Professor Malas said that only one in 10,000 women suffers from this kind of medical condition. He added that the patient’s menstrual cycle will become regular and she can live a normal life.
Professor Corbally said that the success of the surgery was a medical breakthrough in terms of treating congenital anomalies of the female reproductive system at an early age.
It is a medical achievement for King Hamad University Hospital as the experienced and competent medical team worked according to a systematic plan taking care of all the needs of the patient with the highest levels of quality and distinction.
