‘Inculcate habit of hand wash at early age’

Parents have to inculcating the habit of hand washing among children at early age, said Maj. (Dr.) Manaf Mohamed Al Qahtani, Consultant-Internist and Infectious Diseases Physician at the Bahrain Defence Force Hospital.

His comments came on the sidelines of Global Handwashing Day, celebrated on October 15 every year. The day is dedicated to increasing awareness and understanding about the importance of washing hands with soap.

Dr. At Qahtani said parents should instruct students to wash hands regularly.

"Hand hygiene reduces transmission of influenza and acute respiratory tract infections. Hence, developing the habit of hand wash is very essential,” he stated.

He added parents should set an example by washing hands while leaving and returning from work. Dr. At Qahtani also advised to cover the nose while sneezing.

He asked people not to overcrowd hospitals with unnecessary visits to patients.

"Overcrowding increases the risk of infection. Therefore, it is better to enquire about the patients from home," he said.
