74 get jail terms in Bahrain over COVID-19 violations

A Bahraini court awarded 74 defendants jail terms of three-months and above and fines between BD 1000 and BD2000 for flouting coronavirus precautionary measures.

The court also ordered to deport an expatriate, the Chief Prosecutor of ministries and public institutions said. The Public Prosecution said it received 45 notifications from the Interior Ministry security directorates and the Public Health Directorate on COVID-19 violations in public places and commercial outlets.

Separately, the Ministry of Industry, Commerce and Tourism said it shut 23 outlets for flouting precautionary measures. A lawbreaker was sentenced to a year in prison for repeated violations, while others received fines from BD1,000 to BD5,000. The ministry said it inspected 74 commercial establishments during New Year holiday. As of January 5, the number of visits touched 298.
