A team at the Bahrain Defence Force (BDF) Hospital headed by Col Dr Zafer Muhammad Kamal, the first consultant in vascular surgery and catheter therapy, was able to completely treat the thoracic-abdominal aortic aneurysm disease via catheterisation without the need for major surgery.
The vascular team at the BDF Hospital performed catheterisation by placing an internal stent that extended from the thoracic aorta at the top to the abdominal aorta at the bottom.
The placement of an internal stent through the catheter in order to exclude the aortic aneurysm and return its size to its normal size before the expansion is one of the successful modern solutions.
For such serious cases, there are many advantages, including fewer complications associated with this type of procedure compared to traditional surgery, which requires making a surgical incision extending from the upper chest to the abdomen, in addition to other possible complications of the surgery, including death.
The post-catheter CT images showed excellent exclusion of the previous aneurysm and the stent was fixed in the exact location. Dr Kamal expressed his gratitude and thanks to the Commander of the Royal Medical Services, Major General Professor Shaikh Khalid bin Ali Al Khalifa, for his continuous support to the vascular department, so that it is able to reach leadership and excellence in the diagnosis and treatment of vascular diseases.
