Students of Saar Secondary School for Girls came out with flying colours in the Middle East and North Africa Hackathon Innovation Competition in health care and tourism.

Maryam Muhammad AlSayed Maatouq, a member of the winning team, said they designed a smart application called Al-Mouhtar for the competition. The app provides patients with medical analyses, treatment history from hospitals and clinics and other related data in a single file.

“So, if a patient had to visit a hospital or clinic while travelling or after an accident, all of his medical histories are readily available at a click,” said Maryam adding, “He does not have to repeat the analyzes.” Students developed the app under the guidance of Khadija Abbas Al-Asboul, a teacher of the school.

“We managed to take the top spot, thanks to the Ministry of Education and our school for encouraging creativity and innovation, and instilling problem-solving skills in students.”

In the tourism sector, the school developed an application dubbed “Above clouds are present” with Professor Mona Yaqoub Youssef, a school education technology specialist. The app helps travellers with language translation, currency exchange service, baggage tracking, and reservations amongst other services.

A team of students Malak Ali Hassan, Alaa Muhammad Al-Shehabi, Zainab Muhammad Zuhair, Fatima Faisal Al-Zaki, and Zainab Abbas Syed Mahmoud worked for the project.

The competition also witnessed the Jidhafs Secondary School for Girls winning first place in smart cities competition. The winning project was a smart mirror that allows people to try clothes without wearing them.
