Neurosurgeons at Salmaniya Medical Complex (SMC) were able to successfully operate on a 23-year-old male patient who was diagnosed with a rare, deep-seated benign fluid-filled tumour called a colloid cyst.
The patient underwent an urgent life-saving ‘keyhole’ craniotomy, using neuronavigation-assisted endoscopy through a small incision measuring no more than 1 cm, a state-of-the-art surgery that is considered the first of its kind in the Kingdom of Bahrain.
The patient had presented with severe sudden onset of headache, following which brain imaging revealed the diagnosis of colloid cyst − a bag of cells that secrete fluid and take up space disrupting the internal fluid circulation and dynamics of the brain.
Thanks to the multidisciplinary team efforts of neurosurgeons, anaesthetists, nurses and allied healthcare professionals, the patient was discharged within a few days and postoperative follow-up revealed complete excision of the cyst with no associated complications.
Dr Nabeel Hameed, Head of the Neurosurgical Department at SMC, stated that the endoscopic surgical approach to colloid cyst resection has made the surgery much less invasive than traditional craniotomy, with reduced surgical and recovery times.
