Global technology leader Thales has successfully delivered the first phase of upgrading communications systems and airport security as part of the Bahrain International Airport modernisation project.

Currently, the international airport is undergoing a comprehensive two-phase modernisation programme to build an area of 210,000 square metres, which is four times the size of the current building, to increase the capacity to 14 million passengers annually.

The project is an important step in the Kingdom of Bahrain’s 2030 economic vision, which aims to enhance the country’s reputation as a leading aviation hub in the region.

Over the course of 30 years, Thales has built solid partnerships with various public sector institutions in the Kingdom, including the Ministry of Transportation and Communications. It is now one of the main local partners in supporting vital sectors in Bahrain, which is evident from its commitment to Bahrainisation and support of local talent in order to develop sovereign capabilities in line with the 2030 Economic Vision.

Thales, through its local company, Thales Bahrain SPC, intends to contribute to support the Kingdom’s ambitions to develop a knowledge-based economy with a distinctly civil and security infrastructure, with a strong domestic industrial technology base to achieve growth, localisation and industrialisation strategies.

Thales has been selected to supply an integrated solution that covers the security, safety and airport operations aspects, in addition to the communications and infrastructure of the Bahrain International Airport terminal, parking and central utility complex. These technologies focus on smart security, which relies on advanced modular solutions such as video analytics, behavioural and anomaly capture, intelligent incident management, and resource management tools.

Thales has been able to provide an integrated offer to secure and improve all airport operations. By enhancing the centralisation of operations management, Bahrain International Airport can ensure the continued flow of traffic within the airport while meeting all the requirements of large businesses.

This will also reduce waiting times and provide the best possible safety conditions, improve passenger experience, and increase infrastructure performance.

Thales solutions also allow for relevant performance indicators needed to make critical decisions in real-time to make the system more efficient.

Alan Correa, Managing Director of Thales Bahrain, said: “We have made sure that Bahrain International Airport is equipped with the latest smart and innovative solutions. This will ensure optimum protection for passengers, employees and facilities while meeting the requirements of the Ministry of Transportation and Communications and the Bahrain Airport Company by enhancing security at the new airport.

“Thales’ strength in innovation and digital technologies perfectly positions the group to become a preferred partner for aerospace, transportation and public security, the pillars of Bahrain’s smart city ambition.”
