The upcoming poultry facility in Al Ghana will satisfy up to 55 % of Bahrain’s increasing domestic consumption needs, said Works Minister.

The new project, realising in over an area of 500,000 square meters, is being developed jointly with the private sector, said Essam Khalaf, the Minister of Works, Municipalities Affairs and Urban Planning.

The minister revealed this during a visit to the project site in Al Ghana and added that the government is pumping around BD3 million into this project as part of a wide-ranging move to ensure Bahrain’s food security.

“Bahrain is currently producing around 9 million chicks per year through Delmon Poultry Company,” the minister said.

The production meets about 23% to 26% of the market demand. The new facility will raise the local production capacity by 11 million to 20 million chicks.

“This would cover 50% to 55% of local poultry consumption.”

In 2020, Bahrain imported about 70,000 tonnes of poultry, 18,000 tonnes of increase over 2019, where the import was 52,000 tonnes.

“The figures indicate the steady increase in Bahrain’s domestic consumption of poultry meat,” the minister said.

Essam Khalaf attributed the increase to a variety of factors, including the Kingdom’s burgeoning food industry.

Undersecretary of the Ministry Dr Khaled Ahmed Hassan, Director of the Animal Control Department Dr Ibrahim Youssef, Director of the Animal Health Department Dr Fajr Al-Salloum and several ministry officials accompanied Khalaf.
