His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa sent a cable of congratulations to the UAE President, His Highness Shaikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, on the Hope probe’s success in reaching planet Mars.

The UAE’s first mission to Mars reached the Red Planet and entered orbit yesterday after a seven-month, 494 million-km (307 million-mile) journey, allowing it to start sending data about the Martian atmosphere and climate.

The Mars programme is part of the UAE’s efforts to develop its scientific and technological capabilities and reduce its reliance on oil.

The UAE Space Agency, the fifth globally to reach the planet, even has a plan for a Mars settlement by 2117.

“Contact with #HopeProbe has been established again. The Mars Orbit Insertion is now complete,” said the Mohammed bin Rashid Space Centre, where the Ruler of Dubai and the Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi were present to receive the news.

HM the King sent similar cables to the UAE Vice President, Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai, His Highness Shaikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, and Abu Dhabi Crown Prince and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces, His Highness Shaikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan.

HM the King commended the historical scientific feat which underscores the high international status of the UAE and its pioneering role in space exploration.

His Majesty praised the efforts of the Emirati competencies in carrying out the ambitious project which is considered a source of pride to the UAE as well as the Arab and Islamic nations.

HM the King wished the UAE and its people constant growth and prosperity and every success in bringing about further accomplishments.
