His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa yesterday pledged continued effort to attain national strides, marking the 20th anniversary of the National Action Charter (NAC).

Congratulating His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa on the anniversary, the Crown Prince and Prime Minister said, “HM the King’s wise vision bolstered Bahrain’s standing on all levels, supported by wide-ranging development, progress and prosperity.”

“We will continue our efforts, supported by Team Bahrain, to achieve HM the King’s farsighted visions and enhance Bahrain’s standing for progress and prosperity,” HRH said. HM, the King sent a cable of thanks to HRH the Crown Prince and Prime Minister, recalling HRH’s role as chairman of the committee in charge of activating the National Action Charter.

Twenty years ago, on this day, all of Bahrain came out in full force to vote for the National Action Charter of Bahrain - a document put forward by King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa.

In 2001, 98.1% or 191,790 people voted for the national referendum, a Bahraini idea, drafted by Bahrainis and supported by Bahrainis. It was considered the peak of democratic development in Bahrain.

His Majesty described it as the ‘breakthrough in the history of Bahrain’. The document encompasses many political and economic principles that affirm the openness of the democratic direction of Bahrain.

Henceforth, every year on February 14, Bahrain celebrates the anniversary of the National Action Charter.

Today after 20 years, Bahrain is once again proudly celebrating its democratic achievements, human rights freedoms and developments emanated from the National Action Charter
