Seven players from the Jordanian national basketball team have tested positive for COVID-19 after arriving in Bahrain, where they were set to play in the third window of qualifiers for the FIBA Asia Cup 2021 starting Thursday.
Their games in the Kingdom, therefore, have been postponed.
This has been announced by FIBA Asia, continental basketball’s governing body.
A statement on its website said: “Following the COVID-19 Protocol for FIBA Official National Team and Club Competitions and the advice of its Medical Commission, FIBA has decided to postpone the games of Jordan in the upcoming FIBA Asia Cup 2021 Qualifiers in Manama, Bahrain, with the health and safety of players, coaches and officials being the primary consideration.“
The decision was taken after ten members of the Jordan delegation, including seven players, tested positive to COVID-19 after arriving at Manama, despite all delegation members having provided two negative tests prior to their arrival in Bahrain.
In this context, the health and safety of all participants within the Competition bubble can no longer be guaranteed if the Jordan delegation remains within the competition.”
Jordan was scheduled to play four games in Bahrain in the third window.
They have now been rescheduled for a later date.
