The 'Food is Culture 6' festival opened yesterday, connecting culinary and art while giving connoisseurs of art and taste a unique flavour of music.

The experimental project, as in its previous editions, ensures this time also a creative collaboration of chefs and artists.

Kickstarted yesterday at the Bahrain National Museum, the festival, now in its sixth iteration, allowed spectators to taste the recipes created while marvelling at some original musical renditions.

Farah Matar, Director of the Culture and Arts Department at the Bahrain Authority for Culture and Antiquities, was present at the opening ceremony.

“Music and food are the two elements of the event which will tour this year on different sites despite the exceptional circumstances, but strictly following precautionary measures,” said Sheikha Hala bint Mohammed Al Khalifa, the Director-General of Culture and Arts at the Authority.

Unlike previous years, each pair will present their work at different cultural locations across Bahrain, namely the Bahrain National Museum, The Pearling Path Visitors Center, Jasra Handicraft Center, Riffa Fort and the Archaeologies of Green Pavilion.

The authority is also documenting the entire process in the form of an e-book and documentary.

In its first event, the festival brought together Abdullah Bindayna, founder of Mt. Fuji Kakigori and Dessert House, and pop music trio- Abdullah Mahmoud, Debbie Francisco and Shawn Fernandes.

Melodies, when mixed with flavourful Japanese ice cream, gave viewers a unique taste of creative freedom.

The chefs lined up this year are: Chef Irvin Martinez from Cantina Kahlo, founder of Mt. Fuji Kakigori and Dessert House Abdullah Bindayna, creator of Isolated Eats Tabea Lutz, sourdough baker Layal Dana, and the duo behind Alabaster & Cannoli Lara Al Abbasi and Maria Knowles.

The artists this year are the celebrated multimedia artist Ghada Khunji, psychedelic pop band Do You Really Like It?, the two rising fine artists Salman Najem and May Hejiri, and eco-conscious fashion designer Amal Rafie.

One of Bahrain’s most prominent food bloggers, Zainab Akbar, will lead food tours, taking those who join these events, all of which require registration, a trip into the local flavours that make up the nation’s culinary palate.

Founder of TheFoodMenu, Akbar, has scheduled two tours adjacent to this year’s Food is Culture — the first if a food tour of Muharraq on March 13, the second is a food tour of Manama on March 19.

Peninsula Farms, a sponsor for this year’s edition, Perfectly Pressed, a previous Food is Culture participant, and local artisanal café Karmah will all be offering a selection of seasonal products for the duration of the festival.

All the events require pre-registration to participate. To register, visit www.culture. gov.bh or follow accounts on the social media @culturebah.
