French Embassy and key speakers join International Women’s Day celebrations

The French Embassy organised a conference-debate on the role of women as “driving forces of change in the Gulf countries” as part of the International Women’s Day celebrations on Monday.

French Ambassador Jérôme Cauchard delivered an introductory speech in which he recalled in particular that France has committed since recently in an ambitious and resolute feminist diplomacy in line with the programme of the French presidency of the G7 in 2019.

The Secretary General of the Supreme Council of Women (SCW), Hala bint Mohammed Jaber Al Ansari, also delivered a motivational message on the occasion.

SCW Assistant Secre - tary-General Shaikha Deena bint Rashed Al Khalifa opened the conference-debate, underscoring the broad perspectives given to women in Bahrain, even during the health crisis, due to the commitment of the Bahraini authorities and the SCW, chaired by Her Royal Highness Princess Sabeeka bint Ibrahim Al Khalifa, Wife of His Majesty the King.

The Director of the French Arabian Business School, Dr Arnaud Lacheret, also a professor at the Arabian Gulf University and recent author of the book “Women are the future of the Gulf”, spoke about the particularly invigorating contribution of women to the changes in the Gulf and underlined their determination.

Ministry of Foreign Affairs Undersecretary Shaikha Rana bint Isa bin Daij Al Khalifa, the first woman to occupy these high responsibilities and whose presence was welcomed by the Ambassador who recalled that the Bahraini Women’s Day 2020 had honoured Bahraini Women Diplomats, then intervened.

Also participating, in a limited number due to health rules, were the presidents of several of the main Bahraini associations active for the promotion of women, including the association of businesswomen, as well as civil society actors who were able to exchange with the speakers.

The success of this conference-debate, broadcast live on social networks, and the vitality of the exchanges highlighted the essential importance of issues related to the empowerment of women for the Kingdom of Bahrain, France and the world as a whole. It may be recalled that France, under the impetus of President Emmanuel Macron, will co-chair the Generation Equality Forum organized by UN Women in June.
