A two-month ban on catching and selling crabs has gone into effect from today.
This was announced yesterday by Agriculture and Marine Resources Directorate Undersecretary Dr Nabil Abul Fateh who said the clamp is aimed at preserving Bahrain’s marine resources and biodiversity in the territorial waters of the Kingdom.
The ban, which will last until May 15, during the breeding season of the crabs is expected to increase in their numbers.
It is part of the implementation of Resolution No. (52) of 2016 regarding the ban issued by the Minister of Works, Municipalities Affairs and Urban Planning, Eng.Essam bin Abdullah Khalaf.
Maritime supervision teams, in co-operation with the authorities concerned, will launch monitoring operations to prevent any violations of this decision.
The law regarding the ban specifies that during the yearly ban it is prohibited to have nets, tools, or any means to catch crabs on the decks of boats in the areas designated for crabbing, as well as areas for docking boats if their purpose is to catch crabs during the ban.
