The Ministry of Interior has prepared a list of 126 inmates who are eligible to receive alternative penalties. The recommendation is currently with the Public Prosecution, which has initiated a review. So far, a total of 3224 convicts have benefited from the alternative penalties.

The Public Prosecution is studying options about replacing the sentences of inmates who satisfied the legal requirements, said Wael Buallay, the Assistant Attorney General and Chancellor. “A judge in charge of carrying out the procedures to replace the verdict with alternative penalties is working on the list,” Buallay added.

The list supplied by the Interior Ministry also defines the areas the inmates are eligible to serve during the length of their sentence. The period of the alternative penalties will be equivalent to the period left in the jail terms.

The Sentence Execution Directorate said it is working with the Public Prosecution to help other inmates to benefit from the new law.

The Assistant Attorney General further commended the royal directives for extending the reach of the Alternative Penalties and Procedures Law. Praising the initiative, Lawyer Khaled Ali Salman had said the efforts would help them reform and reintegrate into society.

Works are progressing to train the administrative and institutional staff to deal with inmates soundly as per international and national standards.

The General Administration for Reform and Rehabilitation also intends to provide curative and health services to inmates through inpatient clinics or government hospitals.

The Correction and Rehabilitation Department had also intensified its services to limit the spread of Coronavirus among inmates.
