Detecting water leaks landed the students of Karana Elementary School for Girls top honour. The system designed by Zainab Adel Al-Shuyoukh, Fatima Salman, Fatima Taha, Fatima Abdul Jalil, and Fatima Husayn Ali emerged victorious in a science competition. The competition was for designing a project to determine the level of household water consumption.
The Education ministry competition for future scholars also explored using technology to detect water leaks to rationalise water consumption.
The device designed by students works using electronic meters connected to three light bulbs. Students said the device is programmed to determine the percentage of normal or abnormal consumption of water.
The system blinks and sends a message of thanks to the homeowner when the rate of consumption stays ‘normal’. If the consumption exceeds the ‘normal’ rate, the system blinks yellow and sends an alert message to the homeowner stating that the consumption is close to depriving children of their right to water.
The device also produces an audio signal if the consumption is continuous for more than half-an-hours, especially after 12:pm. Assisting the students in the project were Excellence and Talent Specialist Zain Al-Mawali and the science teacher Zahra Al-Shehbi. The team also recommended a media campaign to raise awareness of water security and rationalise water consumption.
